I was skeptical if this would work with my drill since its only 12 volts. I had trouble removing a screw when installing an audio system in a car and the screw ended up getting stripped since I was trying to remove it manually with a screwdriver. At first I thought this was pricey, but compared to other places this was as cheap as it was going to get. I was gonna give up on installing my system but I gave this a try and it actually worked. Its simple to use. You just follow the instructions, bore out a hole in the stripped screw or nail and then flip the tool and extract it. Note you should wear saftey glasses. I didn't have alot of fillings flying around but there were a couple. Also make sure you apply pressure when boring and extracting. Not extreme pressure but pressure like you were drilling/driving a screw in. Also make sure your drill is in reverse. Since my drill was low powered I had it on the highest torque setting. Another thing is to make sure you go slowly, not the speed of a turtle, but slightly slower than what you usually do when drilling. If you have a trigger drill try to pull the trigger slightly don't gun it or you'll possibly make the stripped screw worse or break the tool. You should not have to drill that much to get the tool to bore the hole and once you do that you flip it and use the extractor side to remove it. Know that you will also have to go slow doing this step. It gives the tool a chance to get a footing in the hole that was made so it can catch onto the screw or bolt.

I purchased a set of these a few years ago figuring I'd have a use for them some day. And, hopefully they would work as advertised when the time came to try them out. I tried to remove a stuck 5mm socket head bolt today and ended up ruining two long handled allen wrenches. I tried using a 5mm hex socket and an impact driver and that wouldn't break it loose either. So, I put a breaker bar on the socket and ended up stripping out the head of the bolt. I used the largest sized Grabit and drilled out the head. Then I tried to use the drill with the Grabit but it wouldn't turn it. So, I used a 9mm deep well socket and a breaker bar on the Grabit and the bolt finally broke loose and I was able to remove it.

As a good friend of mine often says: "There are a lot of things in this world that doesn't work... and, this isn't one of them!"

« THE ALDEN 8440P BOLT & SCREW EXTRACTOR WORKS!! »
I removed a stripped shower knob screw that had been causing my shower head to leak. I read all of the positive comments & recommendations from R. EARLS, CONSUMER "PR", & S.GUNNEL "SCOTTGUNN" & bought this set. I waited for about a week before I used it because I was afraid I would break off the head of the tiny screw but following the directions that came with the set & taking my time, the screw came out, I replaced the parts, & it no longer leaks. I would recommend this set to anyone who has the need.

« will break on you while you use them... »
so..the short of the story is that these bits will break. or maybe i should say, i had the same issue that many reviewers had w/ this item. i followed the instructions to the T. everything looked like it was going to work, then as the bit was backing out the broken screw from where it was stuck, the bit broke. not only was i left with a screw that was partially removed, now there was a broken bit in the end of the broken screw. and the surrounding area was damaged as when the bit broke it slipped and damaged the area around where the stuck screw was located. this has been the worst purchase i've made in a long time. now i'm stuck w/ a screw i can't drill out because the broken bit is too hard for anything else to drill into..and the damaged will cost me more $$$ to have fixed. perfect...oh, and i have an extractor set that is basically useless w/ a broken extraction head. do yourself a favor..don't buy this.

    « Not Impressed »
Well after reading several very positive reviews I thought I had the solution to my problem. I have a broken bolt stuck in my license plate holder. The Alden Pro Grabit was able to get an indentation started in the bolt - so it did not jump or slide off. But the second step did nothing. It did not even begin to get bolt out. Not Impressed.
